We finished our time in Mexico with five nights on the small island of Isla Mujeres, a 20 minute ferry ride from Cancun. The island isn’t exactly a deserted paradise as it’s home to numerous hotel resorts. This is for good reason though, as the main beach, Playa Norte, is one of the best we’ve been to.
Our main activity on Isla Mujeres was going to the beach, and luckily we had a perfect set up to do so. We managed to find a little Air B and B apartment right in the centre of town, behind a chain of gift shops, 10 minutes from the beach. There was a little coded safe on the door so when we went to beach we took nothing with us other than towels and drinking water as we mainly spent our time in the sea.
The sea is shallow and the water is crystal clear with a sandy bottom, perfect for floating around doing nothing or for a game of Frisbee. It was by far our favourite beach of the trip and makes us want to return to Mexico again.
ARRIVAL OF SHAUN
We’d planned to meet Aimee’s brother Shaun on Isla Mujeres as we were going to Cuba together. After a missed flight in LA and a lot of messing around he arrived one day late. All was not lost as he squeezed in a quick unplanned tour of LA. That’s how you make the most of a missed flight.
Picking him up from the airport in Cancun ended up being quite stressful as long story short Aimee and I had to sneak though a gap in the fence to get to the particular part of arrivals in terminal 3 where we could meet Shaun and then take the bus. The way we got treated at the airport by some of the workers, drivers and total con artists we met there was disgraceful and we were both close to completely losing it. Once Shaun arrived however, we got on the bus and got the hell out of there.
EXPLORING THE ISLAND BY CART
We saved the best activity til last so we could do it with Shaun. It basically involves whizzing around the island on a rented golf cart which was indeed as much fun as it sounds. We pretty much drove the whole island, dropped Shaun off at midday for his afternoon of scuba diving, then continued to whizz around stopping off for refreshments.
We loved Isla Mujeres, we had great accommodation, everything was easy and the beach was as good as it’s hyped up to be. The trip finished with the best busker of the trip so far playing Hotel California on the way back to Cancun. We all agreed that he definitely deserved a tip, and you have to be good to get a tip of us after the hundreds we’ve witnessed over the past 8 months.
